Beethoven's 'Ninth' – one of the towering masterpieces of classical music.
Tonight we sing this exhilarating work, ending with the famous Ode to Joy. The first reviewers spoke of 'an inexhaustible genius that has shown us a new world', the symphony was full of 'such a fresh, lively, youthful spirit...so much power, innovation and beauty' – as true today as it was at the premiere on the 7th May 1824.
To open the concert we sing the short cantata 'Calm Sea and Prosperous Voyage – a picturesque account of a becalmed vessel and the joy of the crew as the wind returns to their sails.
We are joined by Leeds Symphony Orchestra who are celebrating 40 years under the dynamic and visionary direction of their conductor, Martin Binks MBE, and four superb soloists.
