Mystery surrounds Mozart’s famous Requiem…but you don’t need to know the stories to enjoy this fabulous music, with drama and intensity matched by unforgettable melodies and beautiful moments of peace. The Requiem was left unfinished at the composer’s death, and completed by Mozart’s friend Franz Süssmayr. Composer Duncan Druce returned to Mozart’s sketches for the later movements and it is his completion, which captures the mastery of Mozart with amazing conviction, we perform tonight.
Alongside the Requiem another masterpiece, Haydn’s Nelson Mass, described as ‘arguably Haydn’s greatest single composition’. Written in 1798, as Napoleon threatened to plunge Europe into political and military chaos, it is also known as the Missa in Angustiis (Mass for troubled times). In fact, this glorious work is a wonderful antidote to external troubles, packed with glittering choruses and virtuosic solos.
We are joined by four superb soloists and the wonderful musicians of the Skipton Camerata ‘Yorkshire’s professional orchestra’.
Joanne Dexter soprano
Imogen Garner mezzo-soprano
